However, for me, the most notable feature is the Elkin & Alleghany Rail Trail, which follows an old railroad line. In addition to offering up quality beer and live music, the venue is also home to the Reeves Downtown School of Music. This non-profit educational program is designed to keep the SW Virginia music scene’s flavor intact. The Reeves is a renovated 700-seat movie theater that originally opened in 1941. It reopened in the last decade as a music venue/café, with a great selection of local and craft beers on tap. The arrival of Highland Brewing, Sierra Nevada, New Belgium, and Oskar Blues breweries made Asheville NC a hotspot for beer lovers.

Lower falls will be the next major landmark, with a couple of options for seeing it, too. There’s a spacious platform for you to view lower falls from a distance. You’ll then hike a couple of switchbacks before reaching the portion of the trail that sits alongside the top of the falls (aka “Upper Falls”). Late December through early March are Charlotte's coldest months, with highs in the low 50s F and lows hovering around freezing. Christmas through January is a quiet time in the city, with fewer tourists, cheaper flights, and lower hotel fares. This community fixture is a wine shop, a tasting room, and a bottle shop featuring local wineries and wines from across the world. When thinking about the best things to do in Elkin, North Carolina, we start with the amazing Yadkin Valley wineries found here. But, of course, there’s much more to this lovely small town in Surry County beyond wine. Never try to climb waterfalls or get close to a ledge to get a selfie. Nearby Pilot Mountain State Park has fishing on the Yadkin River. The pleasant temperatures and abundant natural beauty make for some great days on the golf course, and there are over a dozen within 20 miles of Downtown Elkin.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 6.3 square miles (16.4 km2), of which 6.2 square miles (16.2 km2) is land and 0.1 square mile (0.2 km2) (1.10%) is water. You’ll figure that out when walking around downtown, while stopping in one of its cool souvenir shops, or while enjoying a meal at one of the yummy places to eat here.
You can start exploring the outdoors while in Downtown Elkin, as multiple trails run through it. The Elkin Valley Trail Association (EVTA) has worked to connect the town’s trails Mountains-to-Sea Trail, which stretches from Clingmans Dome in Western NC to Jockey’s Ridge on the Outer Banks. Some of our favorites include “Forest Bathing” by Hand in Hand Creative (East Main St). The video that details their creation of this mural is fun to watch, too.
As of the 2020 United States census, there were 4,122 people, 1,618 households, and 1,087 families residing in the town. Many people also know Wilkesboro as the Moonshine Capital of the World, which means there’s also plenty of NASCAR history here. Hometown will take you out on the Yadkin River in a kayak or tube and is a great, locally-owned outfitter. Today, it houses the work of local artists and studios of those who work here on site. Classes are open to the public, so you can come and learn how to paint, draw, weave, build violins, and more. If you don’t meet a winemaker at the Wisdom Table, you’ll possibly meet one at Fruition.
Before digging into the best things to do in Elkin, we think it’s important to understand the town’s history and some interesting facts. Elkin Creek and the Yadkin River actually run right through the town of Elkin, and the Mitchell River has primo fishing spots between Elkin and Dobson, the next town north. The route, which is a pretty drive on its own, stretches through the NC Piedmont and climbs into the North Carolina High Country, just west of Elkin. For those who find themselves in the Elkin area in the summer, it’s worth timing the visit to check out the annual US-21 Road Market. The views from atop Pilot Mountain provide panoramas of the NC Piedmont, Sauratown Mountains, and the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Compare the results to thestraight line distance to determine whether it's better todrive or fly. The database uses the latitude and longitudeof each location to calculate distance using the great circledistance formula. The calculation is done using the Vincentyalgorithm and the WGS84 ellipsoid model of the Earth, whichis the same one used by most GPS receivers. This gives youthe flying distance "as the crow flies." Find your flightdistances quickly to estimate the number of frequent flyermiles you'll accumulate. Or ask how far is it between citiesto solve your homework problems.
Out and back was about 4.5 miles, including some rambling around the waterfall. Except for the descent to the lower falls, which was aided by a rope suspended between trees, the walk was easy. Events have become a summertime monthly event and continue each year. Cruise events involve parking along Main Street as well as cruising around the downtown streets.
Elkin had the biggest cruising community on the east coast during the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. USA Today once featured Elkin and its cruisers on the front page of the national newspaper. A fundraiser was held to raise money to restore the historic Reeves Theater in downtown Elkin. For a $5 donation, participants would be given a decal for their car and then be allowed to cruise the former downtown cruising loop. After Lower Falls, you’ll follow a few inclined switchbacks and some slight incline before the trail straightens and mostly levels out.
Longer Pilot Mountain hikes include the Mountain Trail (4.3 miles, Red Blaze), which connects to Grindstone Trail (3 miles, Blue Blaze). Drive on US-21 for about 20 minutes from downtown Elkin and you’ll reach the Blue Ridge Parkway! From Elkin, you’ll enter at around Milepost 229, which is near Little Glade Mill Pond (MP 230) and Doughton Park (MP 238 to 241) to the south and Cumberland Knob (MP 217) to the north. Of course, one of the best things to do in Elkin is to visit Carter Falls, an easy, kid-friendly hike that was relatively unknown until recently. Personally, I like visiting when the greens of spring and summer haven’t arrived, as your view of the falls are more obstructed during those times.
Guided tours can last anywhere from two to six hours, with the longest tour launching from Roaring River for an 11-mile river run. Luckily, there are several options right outside of the town of Elkin. Five color-coded shuttle vans scoot off in different directions, and all of them are available with the purchase of a day pass.
We delve deeper into them in our Surry County wineries guide, but here’s a brief overview of these seven wineries. While there are many other things to do in Elkin, drinking wine is always number one! There are so many wineries near Elkin that are perfect for afternoon sips. Ask any local about this house today, though, and they’ll likely share how much they like the current owners, Keith and Holly. This wonderful couple is just a part of why we love Six28 House.
Even though you can drive this distance straight through, it might be more interesting to stop along the way. You can scroll down to calculate how many hours it would take if you drive with stops.
